Every parent wants their child to have access to as many opportunities as possible in life. If only there was some way that we could ensure that our children were able to sail through life and straight into a rewarding and long-term career. Unfortunately, such a magical technique does not exist. The best thing that we can do is to try and encourage our children to stay curious and to continue to discover new interests, hobbies, and passions.
Coding is an excellent skill to encourage your children to learn. Not only does it have endless applications for day to day life, including in a number of educational contexts, coding is also a fantastic skill upon which to build a career. Exposing kids to coding earlier will help them to pick it up more easily, and in doing so you will be equipping them with a very valuable skill.
Here are just some of the best reasons to encourage children of all ages to take an interest in coding.
It’s Easier Than You Think
There are now a number of resources online for those who want to learn how to code. One of the best places to start your kids’ coding journey is Code Academy. Code Academy is free to use and lets users learn the ropes of a number of different programming languages.
As well as sites like Code Academy which will provide you with the tools you need to write and execute code as you learn, there are many more which will tell you how to code, even if they don’t actually let you do it on the site.
Combine it With Other Interests
One of the great things about your children learning how to code is that they will be able to create apps and games that are relevant to other interests and passions that they have. The only limit on what can be achieved within an app or game is the imagination of the app developer.
For example, perhaps your son or daughter really loves their baseball. Their first app or program might be a simple one that gives the user some simple information on their favourite teams and players. This could then develop into a baseball game simulation.
Allow them to Express Themselves
You might not think of coding as being a particularly creative or artful activity, but it is, in fact, both of those things. In order to succeed as a coder, programmers need to be able to work out what it is that people want, often before people themselves realize it.
When your child is just beginning to learn to code, they might not be able to do anything too complex. However, as they progress they will soon be able to do more and more. They may also get a kick just out of being able to do something that many of their friends can’t.
Encouraging your children to start learning to code is a smart move for any parent. Your children will benefit enormously in both the short and long-term from learning to code. In addition to the above consideration,s you should also factor in how many jobs and careers are open to someone who knows how to code.
