Tips for Choosing a Plastic Surgeon

Follow

Choosing to have plastic surgery is not a decision to be made lightly. It’s also one you’re going to be living with for a long time. Once you’ve made the choice the next important step to make is to find the best plastic surgeon. You need to be aware that not every physician is qualified or experienced in all the different procedures.

This makes it a little more difficult to find the best plastic surgeon, and it’s more involved than simply getting a referral. You can bear referrals in mind, and a certain amount of online research will be beneficial. However, careful evaluation is required before making your final decision.

Expertise

The plastic surgeon you choose should be certified. In the UK you can find this out by checking the General Medical Council’s list of Specialist Plastic Surgeons. They should also be registered with the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). In the US, a cosmetic or plastic surgeon should be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Coberly is one such surgeon.

There are a number of other US boards such as the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, but certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is first and foremost the most important. Choosing a surgeon who is certified means they have the highest standards of education, safety, training, and ethics.

Experience

Whatever type of surgery you’re considering you need a surgeon who has relevant experience. Surgeons tend to specialize in certain procedures. A good guide to use is to pick a surgeon who has performed your procedure once or more every week for at least five years.

Choosing a surgeon with many procedures under their belt will make it more likely they have the skills you need. The very complex nature of plastic surgery also means they need to keep their hand in and practice often.

Evidence of Results

If you’ve got a surgeon with the right experience and expertise, there’s one more consideration to take into account. What you now need to see is evidence of their results. It is usual for a plastic surgeon to keep a file that includes before and after photos.

Take a look at what they have done and make sure some of the pictures are examples of after photos taken at least a year after surgery. A reputable surgeon should also be happy to provide you with a list of patients you can speak with directly.

Once you’ve chosen a plastic surgeon there are a few more steps to take before you undergo any kind of procedure. You will be given an initial consultation, and this is your chance to ask questions and get a feel for the surgeon. Ideally, you want them to listen to what you have to say, answer your questions clearly and respect your decisions.

If you feel comfortable talking to them about your medical history consider this a good sign. During your consultation ask to be shown around so you can check out the facilities. In the UK it is likely your procedure will be carried out in one of the major hospital groups.
