When was the last time you updated your bedroom? Perhaps it was 5, 10 or even 20 years ago. If it’s all looking a bit out of date, it’s time to fix things. Maybe you never got to decorating properly, and your room just needs some personality or you need more wardrobe space? Whatever the problem is, a new fitted bedroom is a fun project to work on. Your bedroom is your sanctuary and it should be somewhere you can relax. If you don’t like the look of it, you won’t enjoy spending time in there as much. Whether you want to renovate or simply redecorate, you could get a beautiful new bedroom in no time.

Decide on Your Budget

Before you do anything, think about how much money you want to spend. If you only have a small budget, you could still make some big changes. A tub of paint and some new bedding can make a significant difference and won’t cost much. However, if you have more money to spend, you could do a lot more. You’ll be able to buy new furniture and perhaps make changes to the structure of the room, such as building in a wardrobe. It’s up to you how much you want to spend, but make sure you don’t underestimate how much things will cost. It’s always a good idea to leave room in your budget for unexpected expenses.

Clear Out Old Things

You can’t start bringing in the new until you get rid of the old. You probably have items you don’t want to keep, that perhaps you have had for years. Start with small things, such as bedding or picture frames. They’re easier to let go of, and you don’t want a duvet that you’ve had for years and years. Once you’ve cleared out the smaller items, consider your furniture and fixtures. Is the lighting fixture completely out of date? Perhaps the bed is looking worse for wear, or the chest of drawers doesn’t open as smoothly anymore. Decide what you’re going to do with these things – sell, give away, or take them to the tip?

Repurpose Anything You Want to Keep

There might be some items that you don’t want to get rid of, but they still need some updating. For example, perhaps you spent a lot of money on your wardrobe a few years ago. It’s still in good condition, but you feel like it could do with being refreshed. Instead of getting rid of it, you could make some changes to update it. That could involve putting on new handles, or perhaps sanding it down and applying new stain, gloss or paint. Updating your bedroom doesn’t have to mean changing everything entirely. You can breathe new life into old things too.

Assessing the Floor

If you’ve taken everything out of the room to redecorate, start by looking at your floor. You might like it as it is, but there are ways to make a change. You don’t have to go the whole hog and replace the floor. If you have carpets, you could change it, refresh it, or remove it. With wooden floors, you might be able to sand them down and make them a different colour or texture. Of course, you might not want to change the floor at all. Even so, a well-placed rug or two could make a difference in your bedroom.

Bedroom Walls

Once you have a plan for the floor, you need to consider the walls. You’re more likely to want to change them in some way, whether it’s by repainting or wallpapering. You need to think about the style that you’re going for. What do you want your bedroom to feel like? Should it be cosy and warm or cool and modern? You might have a theme in mind that you want everything to fit. Before you can get to work, you might need to prepare the walls. Perhaps you have to remove some wallpaper or paint in a neutral colour, so you have a blank canvas.

Lights are important in any room, but they can be especially important in the bedroom. You use the room for a wide range of things, not just sleeping. It’s essential to be able to have the lights low or brighter if you want to read a book or look for something in the wardrobe. Many bedrooms have one ceiling light, and perhaps a lamp or two on the bedside tables. However, these can seem boring and unimaginative. If you want to spice things up, you should consider some new lighting fixtures or lamps. Instead of a plain bulb hanging from the ceiling with a lampshade, why not install an eye-catching feature. You could also have wall lights, floor lamps, and another lighting. Choose lighting you can control so that you can have as much or as little light as you want.

The Window

Bedrooms need privacy, and windows can get in the way of that. By their very nature, they are revealing. You need the right window dressings for your room to ensure privacy, even during the day. However, you might also want them to let some natural light into the room. The first decision to make is whether you want curtains or blinds. For a more modern look, many people prefer blinds over curtains. There are lots of choices for styles, and you can let in as much or as little light as you want. However, a pair of curtains can look elegant too, so perhaps they would be your preferred option.

The Bed

Your bed has to be the most important part of the room. It’s not a bedroom without one. You might decide that you like the frame or base of the bed and want to keep it. If you want to update it, you could use paint or gloss to refresh it. If you have a divan bed, you could even cover it in new fabric for an updated look. If you don’t like your current bed, buying a new one is an option too. But what sort of look are you going for? Do you want a leather bed for a luxurious room, or perhaps a classy wrought iron frame? Talking about the mattress, I am sure you agree that it has to be practical, rather than looking good. There are several types of mattress from which to choose. You can read for details on what’s available. A memory foam mattress might be one of the most expensive options, but it’s also more comfortable.

Of course, you will only be looking at the mattress when you change your bedding. If you want to keep things simple, you might just buy some sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers. But someone people like to dress up their bed a bit more. If you want to modernise it, you could add some extra details, such as throw cushions or a runner.

Clothes Storage

Everyone needs somewhere to put their clothes and shoes. Perhaps you have already decided to make some changes to your existing wardrobe to update it. But you might want to get rid of it and buy a new one instead. If you want to take on a more extensive project, you could think about putting in a built-in wardrobe. They can change the whole look of your room and make great storage solutions. You might find with a built-in wardrobe that you don’t need a chest of drawers or other storage.

When you buy new furniture, you could go for cheap and cheerful from somewhere like Ikea. However, if you want to make an investment in quality items, it’s worth spending a bit more. Buying more expensive furniture means you could hold onto it for longer. But if you’re planning to redecorate again in a couple of years, it might not be the best thing to do.

Bedroom Tech

Is there any technology you want to add to your bedroom. It’s one way to bring the room into the twenty-first century. Many people put televisions, sound systems, or even coffee makers in their bedroom. These items can make the room more convenient or add entertainment. Even your alarm clock could be a nice modern addition to your bedroom. If you want to add any of these things, you need to make sure you have the right power supply and wiring to install them.

Of course, it’s important not to forget about the little touches that can make all the difference. Some things might not do anything practical, but they can make the room look better. You might want to display things on your vanity table or above the fireplace if there is one. Some people prefer an uncluttered bedroom, but you can still add some small things. You might put some art on your walls or add a vase to one of the surfaces. There are lots of options for adding decorations to your bedroom.

If your bedroom is out of date, don’t leave it looking miserable. You could give it a new look within a day.
