Becoming a better role model for your children

As a parent, it is important that you are setting a strong example for your children. No one is perfect, so you shouldn’t beat yourself up for minor failures. However, generally speaking, you should be doing everything in your power to make positive decisions that you and your children can take pride in. If you are wondering how to achieve this goal, you will need to work your way through the following nine steps. They will guide you towards a healthy, happy, and admirable lifestyle.

Wherever you are in life and whatever you are doing, there is always time to make a change for the better. What are you waiting for? Today could be the first day of the rest of your life!

Rid yourself of any bad habits

Before you do anything else, you will need to rid yourself of any bad habits. Even if you have become an expert in hiding your weaknesses from your children, it is likely that they are influenced by your lifestyle. Whether they are aware of your habits or not, your little ones are sure to pick up on your instability. That is why you need to take control of your lifestyle as soon as possible. Have no fear; you don’t have to complete this process alone. Whatever your issue, there is sure to be a facility that is willing to support you on your journey. For instance, if you are struggling with addiction, you could attend a holistic rehab. This could be a wonderful opportunity for you to get your life back on track in a positive, peaceful, and uplifting environment.

Evaluate your adult relationships

The next step is to evaluate your adult relationships. If you are going to power through your journey to becoming a better role model for your kids, it is essential that you are surrounded by positive influences who encourage you to be the best version of yourself. Now is the perfect time for you to take a step back and sort through your friendship group. Are there any individuals who constantly lead you down a bad path? Do you have any friends that are known for their outlandish behaviour, their love of salacious gossip, or their lack of manners? Have you got any friends that constantly bring you down and cause you to doubt yourself? If your answer to these questions is yes, it is essential that you rid your life of these toxic influences straight away. You should also adopt a similar approach if you are a single parent looking for love. You need to teach your children what to expect from their own relationships. This is your chance to show your kids the importance of positive influences, healthy boundaries, and self-respect.

Learn from your fellow parents

When you are done with sorting through your existing acquaintances, you will need to look out for new and positive relationships to enjoy. Ideally, you should try to establish connections with your fellow parents.

Perhaps you could leave yourself a little more time to hang around the school gates. Or, maybe you could make more of an effort to attend school meetings, fundraising events, or children’s birthday parties. Then, you will need to identify any parents that are doing a good job. Hopefully, spending time in their company will allow you to learn from them and follow their example. If you are feeling brave enough, you could even ask your fellow parents for hints and tips. They are likely to be extremely flattered by your admiration. Not only this but if you are dealing with an honest group of parents, they are sure to have their own doubts and insecurities. Why deal with the ups and downs of parenting alone, when you could create a reliable network of support?

Aim for a stable career path

If you are a working parent, it is vital that you have a stable career path. You need to ensure your work schedule allows you to be there for your kids. Of course, it is important that you are able to impress your bosses, but this should never be at the expense of your family time. If at all possible, you need to find a job that gives you the freedom wake up with your kids, put them to bed, and bond with them every weekend. You should also set your sights on a position with an impressive amount of holiday leave, as this will give you the chance to arrange incredible trips with your brood.

Although time off is essential, there is no shame in caring about your career path. In fact, having a stable job will send an extremely positive message to your little ones. As the years go by, they are more likely to appreciate your efforts and respect your work ethic.

Follow a healthy diet

You can also earn the respect of your children by following a healthy diet. Whilst they might not thank you for this change at first, in the long run, you will be doing your children a favour by leading them towards a balanced and nutritional meal plan. If you have the time to spare, you should endeavour to prepare all of your dishes from scratch. This is easier than you would think, as you can pre-prepare your meals and then place individual portions in your freezer. Depending on the ages of your children, you could even encourage your youngsters to have a go. Working on their culinary skills from a young age will help your little ones to thrive in later life.

Furthermore, spending family time in the kitchen could create an excellent opportunity for you to bond with your loved ones. There really is no downside to maintaining a healthy diet!

Take up regular exercise

The same could be said of taking up exercise. Working out on a regular basis is a wonderful way for you to improve your health and happiness. Exercise is a stress relieving past time that results in the mood-boosting release of endorphins. It will help you to feel more confident, calm, and in control. It should also inspire your children to take up their own fitness activities. This is especially likely to happen if you organise a family work out. At least once a week, you and your loved ones should take on a physical challenge. You could run through your local park, take a trip to your favourite swimming baths, sign up to an exciting class, or follow an exercise DVD at home. Whatever you decide, the most important thing is that you are getting involved in a collective health kick.

Embrace an eco-friendly lifestyle

Along with your exercise sessions, you should also work with your loved ones to embrace an eco-friendly lifestyle. Why not organise a family meeting and talk through your options? You could weigh up the pros and cons of installing solar panels, setting up a compost heap, investing in your insulation, and replacing your light bulbs with LED alternatives. Whilst your smallest children might be too young to understand everything you are talking about, it is a good idea for them to be exposed to these ideas from an early age. It is also a good idea for you to teach your kids about recycling. Rather than taking on this responsibility alone, it will be so much easier for you to recycle your waste if your entire family is on board. Just remember to make the process as child-friendly as possible. You could turn it into a game, create a colourful reward chart, or select prizes for your family’s best recycler.

Help out in your local community

Another vital step is to help out in your local community. If you are determined to teach your children good values, you will need to embrace your philanthropic side. This could involve anything from volunteering at a local charity or entering a sponsored sporting event. Enthusiasm is infectious, so try to find an activity that you truly care about. It might take you a while to identify the perfect means of helping out, but once you do you will have a lovely past time to share with your kids. It could be that they fall in love with the same volunteering activity as you, but it is also possible that they will have a passion of their own. Keep pushing forward until everyone in your family has found a worthy cause to support.

Always look on the bright side of life

Last but not least, you should set yourself the challenge of always looking on the bright side of life. The importance of maintaining a positive outlook is one of the most valuable lessons you can teach your children. You can’t guarantee that their lives will be easy, but you can help them to weather the storms ahead. You should set a good example by repeating positive mantras at the open and close of every day. You should also create a list of uplifting quotes that you want to pass onto your youngsters. Finally, you should meet your own challenges with an open mind, a broad smile, and endless amounts of enthusiasm.
