WOOD FLOORING SPRING CLEANING & MAINTENANCE GUIDE
Wood floors will last a lifetime, but they do need a little TLC to help keep them looking their best. Here, wood flooring expert Peter Keane, Director of The Natural Wood Floor Company in Wandsworth, shares his top tips:
Dry cleaning: Use a vacuum, scissor mop or soft bristled broom to remove any dust and dirt. Ensure you remove any abrasive particles of grit as these could scratch the timber.
Damp cleaning: To remove soluble dirt, use a spray-buff system or a mop and bucket (which is damp, not wet). Avoid general household cleaners, as some contain bleach and abrasives. We recommend the Bona Wood Floor Cleaning Kit.
Further protection: To avoid having to completely re-sand and seal your floor, it’s a good idea to apply a protective coat annually. This will fill in any minor scratches and provide the wood with a brand new, hard-wearing layer. There’s no need to move furniture, as it’s only the traffic routes which need to be treated. Clean the floor first to avoid sealing in any marks.
A liquid wax is recommended for oiled floors (applied neat) while lacquered floors will benefit from a liquid polish – supplied in a concentrated form, so dilute with water first. Both treatments are applied using a standard mop, so are quick and easy.
